Chromecast Now Available in Canada, UK & 9 More

Google has finally launched its Chromecast streaming dongle — which allows for ’casting’ of content from a smartphone, tablet or laptop to any HDMI-equipped TV — outside the US for the first time since it launched in July last year.

From today, Chromecast is available to buy in Canada, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Spain, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland, in addition to the US. In the UK, it costs £30 and is available from Google Play, Amazon, Currys and PC World – those latter two got a bit ahead of themselves and actually put it up for sale ahead of launch.

It doesn’t just work with Android tablets and smartphones either, it can also be used with iOS devices via the Chromecast app, with Chrome for Mac or Windows, or using a Chromebook. For a list of supported services, check out this list.

Pandora Joins Chromecast Bandwagon

When Google announced its Chromecast TV device this summer, it promised that Pandora would eventually work with it. The day has finally arrived: The popular music app now offers an  update in the Google Play Store that lets users pipe music through the thumb drive–shaped TV streaming device.

iPhone users get Chromecast streaming as well, although iPad users will have to wait for now. Pandora says it is “coming soon.”

Hulu Plus App Updated to Support Chromecast Streaming

Google’s Chromecast wireless streaming dongles will now support content from the US movie and TV streaming service Hulu Plus.

Addition of support for Chromecast brings shows like “Modern Family,” “New Girl” and “Parks and Recreation,” to the big-screen via your smartphone or tablet.  As with other Chromcast apps, to view the content on a TV, you simply hit the ‘Cast’ button which is now present in the app.

The Hulu Plus Chromecast functionality includes a custom remote control that has all the usual playback controls (for playing, pausing, etc.), along with a 10 second rewind options as well as the option to enable captions or jump straight to your favorite moment in a TV show. Neat.

Google Gives #Netflix Users A #Chromecast Tour

Google has posted a video to its Chrome YouTube channel discussing how to cast using Netflix. Google unveiled the device at a press event last month, launching with Netflix suppor immediately.

“Simply plug Chromecast into your TV, connect it to Wi-Fi, then launch Netflix on your Android device, iOS device or laptop to start playback on the TV. This will give you another great way of finding TV shows and movies to watch and a great TV viewing experience,” Netflix said at the time.

If you still get DVDs from Netflix, you’ve probably been seeing Chromecast ads on the envelopes.
