Airbnb Updates Design Introduces New Logo

By Roberto Baldwin at TNW:

Airbnb today unveiled a new flat site and mobile design and replaced its logo with something that resembles an upper-case A, amongst other things. One glaring issue is that it looks nearly identical to the logo for Automation Anywhere.

The new design removes all the drop shadows from the site and mobile apps (iOS and Android) and uses a system-wide font. It’s cleaner and easier to navigate which is helpful when you’re trying to book a spare bedroom in Hawaii for your next vacation.

#INFOGRAPHIC: The A to Z Guide to Personal Branding

By Barry Feldman at Social Media Today:

I’m a brand. You’re a brand. Tom, Dick and Harry? Brand, brand, and brand.

But Tom started it. Yes, I'm talking about Tom Who-Wrote-a-Ridiculous-Number-of Non-Fiction-Best-Sellers Peters.

It was 1997. The web was just a baby. Maybe you were too. I was no baby, but I was practicing personal branding. I just didn’t know it. I had started my business just two years prior, so I was brand-building semi-obliviously.

In an edition of Fast Company magazine, in an article titled, “The Brand Called You,” Tom Peters declared it a brand new world. He wrote, “To be in business today, our most important job is to be head marketer for the brand called You.”

Seven paragraphs later, he said, “The web makes a case for branding more directly than any packaged good or consumer product ever could.”

Then he made a bit of a crystal ball statement. “When everybody has email and anybody can send you email, how do you decide whose message you’re going to read and respond to first and whose you’re going to send to the trash unread? The answer is personal branding.”

Then he hung up his dial-up modem and kept writing.

Person branding guru Dan Schawbel was just 14 at the time.

It would be 10 years later when Dan took the baton and ran with it in his book, “Me 2.0.” The New York Times dubbed Dan a “personal branding guru.”

In the first chapter, Dan pointed out 10 years prior entrepreneurs primarily connected offline through networking events. People spent decades working for companies, often hanging around until retirement. They had few networking tools.

New century, new rules.

Job security doesn’t exist. When you’re looking for a job, your GPA will likely take a backseat to your communications skills—writing, social media, presenting.

Obviously, with the second wave of the web—Web 2.0—comes a massive shift in how things work. Unless you want to give in to becoming increasingly irrelevant, you have to recognize communications go both ways, community is all-important and the mark you make online is the heartbeat of your brand.

To the individual, personal branding is almost a survival tactic. I think it’s a fun fight, but let’s be real. You need new strategies and a wider roster of skills.

I’ve been working at them, and lately, working hard to share what I’ve learned. I offered important personal branding tips from Michael Hyatt and me on my blog, The Point. In another post, you can also read about a way to gauge your progress by doing a search for yourself.

I also created an infographic, where I consolidate and alphabetize 26 of the best tips I’ve gathered. I hope you get something out of it.

Foursquare makes their “Save to Foursquare” button useful for publishers

More than a year ago, foursquare introduced the “Add to Foursquare” button, aiming to get publishers to add the badges to their reviews to make it easy for foursquare users to add them to their to-do lists. Each button was cumbersome to implement, so very few publishers made regular use of them.
Foursquare today is finally making those buttons easier to implement — and they’re adding a useful tool for foursquare users, too. It makes it very easy to add content you find around the web directly to your foursquare to-do list so you can be reminded of it later. I do this very often, so anything that makes it simpler is a welcome change.
The new “Save” buttons that foursquare is rolling out allow publishers to add them to their templates once. When visitors click the “Save,” the button searches for any location that’s mentioned on the page — whether it’s a store, restaurant, concert hall, or anything in between — and prompts them to add the venue to one of their lists.
If they choose their to-do lists and have Radar enabled, they’ll be reminded to check in there. It will include the publisher’s branding and a link back to the original article, so you can quickly remind yourself why you put the place on your to-do list in the first place.
The buttons are rolling out today on partner sites like Frommer’s Travel, Eater.com, Time Out NY, Time Out Boston, Time Out Chicago, Time Out NY Kids, New York Magazine, CBS Local Digital Media and AskMen.com. The code is available for any publisher to begin using today. Sites that already use the hCard or OpenGraph formats will find it very easy to implement. Two different sizes are available.
For foursquare users, a new bookmarklet has also been created. Clicking it will do the same thing as the “Save” button, but for any page on the internet. You’ll be able to quickly add places to your to-do list on any page you stumble across, whether they’re hip to foursquare or not. (UPDATE: the bookmarklet and matching Chrome extension are now available here.)
Brands will also be able to embed a foursquare “follow” button on their sites that’s similar to Twitter’s follow button.
With foursquare becoming a household name, it’s likely we’ll see these buttons rolling out to many sites — especially those offering any sort of location-based content — just as we’ve seen Like, Tweet and +1 buttons added virtually everywhere. It’s a great, easy way for brands to extend their reach beyond their sites and on to foursquare. In addition, these buttons are nice for large chains who can add them to their store locators so customers will be able to save a specific location directly to their phones.

Link Building with YouTube, StumbleUpon, Google+, LinkedIn [Infographic]

In part, link building is very important for internet marketing efforts because search engines are finding superior ways to determine the quality of each link. It’s important for businesses who leverage search to maintain their quality links, and the following infographics give you a few tips.

It starts with building a network of bloggers and guest authors. The relationship is reciprocal and both websites facilitate an ongoing exchange of quality content and links. The infographic below offers applicable information on how to build links, which add to an overall social media marketing plan.

Turn Your YouTube Channel Into A Website In A Minute With VidCaster …For Free

If you’ve got a YouTube channel you can now turn it into a website in minutes with VidCaster, a fun platform that launched last year to let content creators easily publish and distribute video content online.  This week VidCaster announced a cool new integration with YouTube that lets you automatically create a custom video website featuring all of your YouTube videos and the best part is, it’s free!

How does it work?  Just head over to VidCaster.com/youtube to get started.  You’ll be asked to connect to your YouTube channel, choose a template, add your logo, confirm your VidCaster domain and – voila! – your very own video website will be created.
Your VidCaster site is automatically synced to your YouTube channel, meaning that every time you upload a new video it will be added to your website without any action on your part (as long as they’re listed as “public”).  You can also manually add videos from other YouTube channels.  There are no bandwidth or storage limitations because all of your video is stored on YouTube and the service is entirely free.  Users are only required to pay $20 per year if they want to host their VidCaster site on a personal custom domain.

Kieran Farr, CEO and co-founder of VidCaster, says, “YouTube is home to an amazing amount of video content and now the owners of that content can easily create their own branded destination sites.  And because VidCaster Free automatically syncs with a YouTube channel, no maintenance is required beyond the initial setup.”
Another great thing about the VidCaster Free plan is that it includes basic video SEO so your site will be more likely to show up in search results on sites like Google.  Farr explains, “If you take a YouTube embed code and just paste it into, say, a blog post, search engines actually don’t know that it’s a video so users searching for your video will have a hard time finding it.  With our automatic video SEO, that’s not something you have to worry about – it just works.”
YouTube users—do you think you’ll be using VidCaster to turn your channel into a website?

Why You Should Design Your Business Around Social

“The social version of anything is more engaging and will outperform non-social.”
That’s a direct quote from an interview with Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg at the 2010 Web 2.0 Summit.

He noted that we are all hard-wired to connect and engage with other people.
This followed his comment that “Over the next 5 years most industries are going to get redesigned around people.”
At this year’s Web 2.0 Summit, Facebook’s Chief Technology Officer Bret Taylor carried the torch and gave some additional insights into the future of social.
“In a few years from now, nearly every single person at Facebook will be working exclusively on mobile.”
These are all profound statements that merit your attention as business owners and managers.

Social is Serendipity

Bret Taylor went on to elaborate something that we all know.
Social is not a layer that you add to your business marketing. It has to be baked in.
He said, “Social means serendipity – it means seeing what your friends are doing in context.”
Serendipity is not a word that most small business people use. However, they do understand context, and its significance for being findable online.
Context is connecting the dots to gain new business from successful client relationships.
What is context for most local businesses?

Social is Closeness

Our social connections are the close friends with whom we grew up, went to college, or now have an ongoing business relationship.
Context is closeness. How close you are to someone determines the depth of your relationship – and how much you will share.
What is it that you most often hear from marketing pundits? Get close to your customers.
What does that mean for your business?
You got it – go all in on mobile.
What matters most to people is what is here and now. This is why local businesses have an advantage moving forward if they capitalize on their location.

Social is Relationships

Mark Zuckerberg made an interesting comment with regards to relationships – that there is a cost-benefit to every relationship.
If your relationship is small, the investment and associated cost for maintaining it is small. Think of this as your followers on Twitter.
Your big relationships are your customers. They are investing in you – which means you have to invest in them.
Businesses have traditionally recognized this, but now they have to translate that to a business environment that is becoming profoundly social.
Are you giving your customers a platform with which to be heard – such as a blog?
If not, are you actively monitoring your brand on the major social networks – and responding in kind?
These are just a couple examples of what it means to design your business (and your business model) around social.
How do you plan to design your business around social?

Wikipedia and Social Media Marketing Techniques for Websites

Social Media on the internet is a vast platform, and is being used rampantly as a social platform, to share news and views, comments and likes, and other discussions. Anyone with no regard to age sex or community, even borders can participate in such social discussions and networking. Journalism has also undergone a significant transformation in the way it shares stories and news.
Wikipedia is one of the most commonly used social media platform. The journalists of today’s era are using Wikipedia mostly to get a glance of top stories and news; to get new contacts and new forums. This does not only signal a new age for social media but also a new creed of journalists who believe that socially altered news and views are valuable objects of news. This is particularly true in the case of journalists belonging to the UK.
The Wikipedia is also on the road to launch a “Love” button by the week coming up. This will allow users to appreciate stories by using the love button, thereby sending virtual beer, cats and more. This feature is supposed to be called WikiLove, this feature seeks to reinforce positive affirmations amongst users. Thus amidst likes, dislike, share and comment, Love is going to be the rage on social media platform, the prelude being taken on by the most popular social media channel – Wikipedia.
The WikiLove feature is a simple one that puts up a heart icon on the user page, clicking it will display a menu that will allow users to send a virtual gift and a crisp piece of note. Another remarkable feature will be the option to create new gifts apart from kittens and beer.
The company explains this innovativeness as am urge towards quality as well as reliability; thus the development of such sophisticated tools aiding users to socialize various conventions. Every act needs appreciation and reinforcement if it is acceptable. Thus reinforcing good work with barn stars and badges, sending across appreciation with beer and kittens, has hailed the social media world. The ultimate destination which social media in general is seeking to achieve is not far now, where the world communicates and interacts, on one common platform – the World Wide Web.
The Wikipedia in just few years has emerged as one of the most popular websites. This social media website has grown up to be predominantly positive and neutral source of reliable information.

8 Deadly Sins of Site Design [Infographic]

You could say there is no right way to design and build a Web site – but you'll find plenty of wrong ways. KISSmetrics outlines eight of them with an infographic that answers the question "what makes someone leave a website? If you're designing or responsible for a site for a business, you might want to pay close and particular attention.
I'm pretty forgiving when it comes to #6 (boring content, boring design) at least when it comes to theboring design part. Why? Content is king, presentation comes second. If a site has the content I'm looking for, I'll stick around as long as it isn't hideous or afflicted with some of the other sins mentioned.
For example, obtrusive audio and video? I'm gone. I hate playing "find the tab that's playing audio" when a site decides to start playing video or audio. Bad content structure is another killer – make it easy to find what I'm looking for. Far too many sites, especially in the enterprise space, make it easy to find what the marketing department wants me to see. That's not the same thing as what I'm looking for, usually.

Interestingly enough, Adobe Edge shares the name with Adobe’s free newsletter, which is bound to create some confusion among users.

iPhone Photography Applications at their Best to Serve You

iPhone Photography applications are being search much more than they were before, because of the improvements in iDevices. Photography being my own passion, makes the photography section of App Store my favourite place. Prior to the improvement, now everyone has a beast in their hands too, because of the new technology in the cameras of iPhones. These high functions and support makes iPhone Photography rise to another level indeed. And thus the apps number for iPhone Photography has started to increase from sometime and are much appreciable.
There are hundreds and thousands of apps for iPhone Photography, but being myself a photography, I know which apps serve our needs the best, and hence I tried to compile up a list of all those apps that are really worthy to be installed. Some of these are free, while some are to be bought, but their price is just not more than $2 at most.
